Abstract
Multicast is the transmission of information to a specified group of hosts or processes in the network. Supporting multicast communication becomes more and more important in today's multimedia applications such as video conferencing, stock information distribution. This paper surveys the current state of the arts of the multicast techniques by reviewing various important multicast protocols reported in the literature and then identifies and discusses the important issues of multicast communication in the aspects of multicast routing, group management and guarantee quality of services. These issues are closely related with each other and the existing techniques that deal with these issues are reviewed. The future research areas of multicasting are also suggested in this paper.
